About 'black horse pub and tavern'|A Night at the Cock and Bottle: Tavern Names
When Lancaster , Pennsylvania is mentioned to most outsiders they immediately have thoughts of Amish horse and buggies, Dutch Wonderland and farms that have the odor of fresh manure. Do not be fooled though, Lancaster has changed tremendously in the last few years. With the new Clipper Magazine Stadium, the home of the Lancaster Barnstormers Atlantic League baseball team, as well as the new Convention Center in the middle of the city, new pubs, bars and breweries have sprung up. Iron Hill Brewery became part of the Franklin and Marshall Campus and bars such as The Brick Yard and Annie Bailey's Irish Pub were opened in town. All of which are very nice and can be enjoyable at the right hours of the day and evening, but none are a traditional brewery to the Lancaster area such as the following three. Bube's Brewery located just outside of Lancaster city in Mount Joy , PA was established by Alois Bube when he purchased the small brewery in 1876. Alois was a German immigrant who stepped into the late 1800's German Style Lager boom. First let's get to the main reason us beer fanatics go in search of local breweries, the beer. Bube's brews six different beers: Kolsch, Red Ale, Stout, Brown Ale, Heffweizen and an IPA. All of the aforementioned are great brews but being a hops guy myself I must note that the IPA is excellent. Bube's is not your typical brewery when it comes to dining. They offer three different dining experiences. The Biergarten is an outdoor dining area in the style of a drinking garden. The Bottling Works is a tavern style restaurant located in the original bottling plant. My favorite of the three is Alois: Located in the Victorian Hotel that Alois Bube had built and the dining rooms vary in décor and art. Along with the dining rooms, the original bar is also located in this portion of the brewery. Alois offers a variety of different experiences from, live music to murder mysteries. The murder mysteries add an entertaining element to your dining experience, better then eating a TV dinner and watching CSI, trust me. The Murder mysteries are priced at $38.00 a person, this includes your complete meal. If you're feeling adventuress and are looking for a fun night out with great dining and beers, Bube's Brewery is the place to go. Bube's Brewery: 102 North Market Street Mount Joy , PA 17552 717-653-2056 www.bubesbrewery.com The Taproom of Spring House Brewing is the newest brewery to Lancaster . Opened on February 3rd of 2011 Spring House Brewery sells beers brewed by the same name located in Conestoga PA. The dinning experience is much different then Bube's Brewery. The menu is much smaller, mostly consisting of soups, dips and sandwiches; and there are no murder mysteries. When you go to the Taproom you go for the beer. The brews consist of: Seven Gates Pale Ale, Goofy Foot Summer Wheat, Diabolical Doctor Wit (Belgian style) Atomic Raygun Imperial Red, Planet Bean Coffee Stout, Beyond the Gates Double IPA, Kerplunk Imperial Chocolate Stout, Two Front Teeth Holiday Ale, Smoked Porter and Cosmic Monster Belgian Style Quad. Availability differs, most are seasonal brews and the draft selections change daily. For a different experience than a downtown brewery I suggest taking the short trip outside of Lancaster city to where most of the Spring House beers are brewed in Conestoga. Located in an old barn, Spring House is a unique brewing and tasting experience, call or e-mail ahead for times. No matter what the season even with the over the top names, these brews will not disappoint. I first stumbled onto Stoudt's when I purchased a case of their Scarlet Lady Ale; besides my wife I had never fallen so hard. The brew pub is designed in an old English pub style and is attached to a Black Angus Steak House for meat lovers such as myself. On my first trip to Stoudt's I was accompanied by my equal beer enthusiast father in-law and we could not have been any more pleased. The atmosphere is tremendous and the people are friendly enough that they could pass as family. The food is excellent with specials of sauerkraut and sausages as well as Steaks you could eat in heaven. Stoudt's has a number of beers and styles to choose from. Their flagship beers consist of American Pale Ale, Gold Munich Style Helles, Scarlet Lady Ale and Pils German Style Pilsner. Stoudt's season beers are an assortment of the Winter Ale, Karnival Kolsch, Smooth Hoperator, Heifer-In-Wheat and the Oktober Fest. They also have a couple of specialty brews of Old Abominable Barley Wine and their Brewer's Reserve. Stoudt's rounds out their collection with what they dub their big beers, Fat Dog Stout, Double India Pale Ale and Triple (a Belgian abbey-style ale). Stoudt's is the all around brewery with great food and even better beer. Stoudt's Brewery Black Angus Restaurant and Pub Route 272 2800 North Reading Road Adamstown , PA 19501 717-484-4386 www.stoudtsbeer.com In addition to the food and beers at Bube's Brewery, Spring House and Stoudt's, there are antiques and shops near by and on site. Bube's has an art gallery and Stoudt's is located right in front of a living German style town. Spring House has options as well whether you go to the Taproom in Lancaster City , where there are stores and restaurants within walking distance or you attend their location in Conestoga, with the Outlets near by. If your spouse or significant other is not into breweries or beer, you can sit happily on your bar stool knowing you have plenty of time to enjoy what these breweries have to offer while you better half saves you money shopping. Next time you're thinking of a weekend getaway or you accompany your family to Dutch Wonderland, don't think of Lancaster as nothing but Amish people and farms of a foul odor. Amish people are very friendly, nice and are a great part of the community and those smelly farms produce the foods you eat everyday. If you are not into those things, but you are into good brews and great food, Lancaster will not disappoint. Keep an open mind and enjoy.
